No man who owns his own house and lot can be a communist, said William Levitt, the developer who created the American suburbia of the 1950s in Fordistic tempo – one house per 16 minutes. This statement is interesting because democracy based on the ownership of property won in the Cold War, and properties, whether we like it or not, are exactly what we, architects, deal with. Life and work on the market and for the market does not only change the profession, it also changes us and everything that surrounds us.
